Ahead of President von der Leyen’s State of the Union address, a coalition of European digital associations is calling on the European Commission to establish a clear, coherent, and rights-based EU framework for protecting children online.

The joint statement argues that diverging national approaches risk fragmenting the European framework, creating inconsistent protections that vary depending on which Member State a child logs in from. Children, families, regulators, and digital services would all benefit from greater clarity and consistent enforcement at EU level.

“Protecting children online is a shared priority across Europe. Member States are right to want action, but a patchwork of national rules will not give children consistent protection. The strongest response is one clear, rights-based European framework that is properly enforced and works for children and families across the EU. That is the direction we hope to hear from the Commission on Wednesday.” — Ben Brake, Director General, DOT Europe
